Much of the story told in For the Love of Mike was set into motion by Don, Anne’s first husband who died on January 23, 1997. It was at his insistence they moved to Houston in 1988 as he had spent the first eleven years of his life in Midland and wanted to return to Texas.
Don was an intelligent, talented man with a veneer of fun-loving charm that hid his deep personal insecurities. In an example of his playful side, he would summon Anne home from the neighborhood swimming pool by blaring Jimmy Buffet’s cover of Brown Eyed Girl out the window loud enough to hear a block and a half away. Sadly, Don was pursued by demons that only drew closer as the years went by. Consequently, he took Anne through uncharted waters that tragically ended his life while leading her to a better one.
